Ulasan: MANOWAR Kings Of Metal MMXIV CD

Sedikit ulangkaji. Album ini asalnya dirakam pada tahun 1988 dan album terakhir menampilkan gitaris Ross The Boss kerana mahu kembali kepada band punk-rock beliau, The Dictators. Beliau keluar tanpa masuk-masuk kembali. Ia juga adalah album terakhir drummer Scott Columbus (beliau kembali untuk album Louder Than Hell pada tahun 1996 dan kemudiannya meninggal dunia pada tahun 2011).

Ditanya kepada Joey DeMaio kenapa rakaman semula untuk album ini dibuat, beliau menjawab,

"Well, it’s the twenty-fifth anniversary of the release of the record, and it’s the record people all over the world love, and we love it, too. We played the songs over the last 25 years which have matured and changed, and we wanted to also give the current band members the chance to record the songs that they love so much."[SOURCE]

Ini adalah benar kerana pada rakaman terbaru ini, hanya beliau dan Eric Adams (vokal) saja yang original. Lagi dua, Karl Logan (gitar) dan Donnie Hamzik (drum) adalah muka baru dalam rakaman ini. Sebenarnya Karl Logan telah menyertai MANOWAR sejak album Louder Than Hell (1996) lagi sementara Donnie Hamzik adalah drummer album pertama, Battle Hymns (1982).

Secara amnya, ini adalah album kekeluargaan MANOWAR kerana setiap ahlinya adalah ahli MANOWAR juga.

Yang menjadi tandatanya dan juga masalah adalah, adakah album ini dapat menyaingi rakaman asal album tersebut? Soalan ini biasanya dikategorikan dalam soalan bodoh. Mana mungkin album rakaman semula boleh menyaingi album asal? Mungkin dari segi kualiti rakaman namun emosi, memori dan originaliti, memang tidak terlawan.

Soalan seterusnya ialah, soalan apa yang nak ditanya? Tiada soalan yang perlu ditanya. Anggaplah ia sebagai album yang dipenuhi dengan tandatanya. Namun banding-membanding tidak boleh dielakkan.

Paling nyata dalam album ini ialah nyanyian Eric Adams nampak usianya. Banyak tempat yang mana nyanyian pitch tinggi dalam album asal terpaksa dijeritkan dengan garau dalam album ini.

Dan sudah tentunya gitaris Karl Logan menyuntik sentuhan solo gitar beliau walaupun selalunya melodi asal dikekalkan. Sound gitar beliau adalah unik Karl Logan. Ini memberikan keunikan khusus untuk album ini.

Paling menonjol, dalam track A Warrior’s Prayer MMXIV di mana naratif asal dibuat oleh Arthur Pendragon Wilshire sedangkan untuk album ini oleh Brian Blessed. Saya agak selesa dengan naratif asal. Saya rasakan Brian Blessed agak over dalam naratif beliau.

Dalam bass solo Sting Of The Bumblebee, Jeoy DeMaio cuba untuk menonjolkan kembali kenapa ianya istimewa selain dari beat-per-minute yang mencapai nilai 300. Untuk itu bunyi metronome sengaja diperdengarkan sekali dengan solo bass. Tetapi mengapa track ini dipendekkan, tidak dinyatakan sebabnya.

Soalan paling patut dijawab ialah adakah album ini perlu dimiliki. Sudah tentulah! Terutamanya jika anda adalah peminat MANOWAR atau sekurang-kurangnya peminat kepada album Kings Of Metal.

Ditambah pula album ini datang dengan fatbox jewel case, dua booklet, dua CD dan gambar-gambar menarik. MANOWAR memang tidak pernah menghampakan peminatnya.

Saintis muda

Ismail (12 tahun) relaks baca buku Awesome Space sambil melayan The Cardigans - Life CD selepas selesai kelas agama waktu malam.
 
All the great scientists minat dengan sains sejak dari kecil lagi. Semuanya tergerak atas perasaan "ingin tahu" dan "kagum" dengan alam (ciptaan Tuhan). They "wander" dan "wonder" menggunakan pengetahuan yang sedia ada ditambah dengan imaginasi sendiri.

Cuma yang Ismail takde buat masa ni ialah kecenderungan pada Matematik. Kecenderungan pada matematik adalah sebab kenapa saintis itu jadi hebat. Mungkin sebab tak nampak kaitannya lagi kot?
Sebab takde kecenderungan pada Matematik le juga yang menyebabkan Bapak Ismail tak bergerak kemana-mana. Saya harap kesilapan ini tidak berulang pada Ismail :)

Nasib baik juga Ismail (dan adik beradik) agak fasih berbahasa Inggeris. Boleh la faham buku English. Dan kalau perlu untuk baca buku yang lebih advanced, ianya sudah tersedia boleh dibeli di kedai buku. Ada banyak.

Agak malang buku sebegini dalam bahasa Melayu amat kurang. Yang banyaknya lebih kepada buku agama je dan novel bukan-bukan.

English adalah penting untuk pemahaman sains dan matematik zaman ini.

Rungutan pemain piring hitam

Kadang-kadang kesian kat diri sendiri yang terjebak dengan piring hitam ni.

Konon nak dengar sound hebat dari piring hitam seperti kata kebanyakan orang.

Modal ciput maka sound system pun harap beli bajet dan 2nd hand pulak tu. Ruang nak dengar pun sempit. Nak pasang kuat-kuat supaya semua sound keluar pun tak boleh sebab takut ganggu ketenteraman awam (dan ahli keluarga yang lain). Piring hitam yang betul2 nak dengar, mahal pulak sampai berpeluh di dahi nak membelinya.

Penyudahnya jadi whiner je. Pressing tak bagus la, leceh la, malas nak cuci la, bungkusan datang piring hitam bengkok la.

Dah sebulan pasang cd je. Tiba-tiba jadi aman, tenteram boleh baring terlentang lama depan stereo dan dunia ni nampak ceria sikit dari dulu hahaha.

Jual buku teks

Masa grad bachelor dulu, takde sebiji buku teks pun saya jual balik. Semua simpan. Siap nota-nota yang hilang tu, fotostat balik dari kawan untuk simpanan. Nota2 tu sampai sekarang ada simpan kat ofis. Banyak menolong sebenarnya masa awal2 kerja tak ingat, terus refer dengan pantas pada nota/buku teks.

Tapi saya tak tau le graduate sekarang ni. Bila grad je, terus jual buku teks. Tak tau le depa ni nak jadi engineer ke nak meniaga takaful bila keje nanti.

Harap depa tau yang sekarang komplen dari industri ialah fresh engineers tak tau nak buat keje. Banyak terpinga2. Abih camno, nak bertanya segan (al-maklum graduan dari UTP universiti ada kelas gitu), nak refer buku/nota, semua dah buang/jual.

Bootleg

Isu mat metal sekarang ialah bootleg (cetak rompak). Macam-macam alasan diberi untuk membenarkannya (jual beli). Antaranya yang paling popular, band tu dah kaya. Cuma yang tak pernah ditanya ialah kepada band yang dibootleg samada mereka rela atau tidak.

Alasan kedua popular ialah merchandise band tersebut mahal tahap tak mampu beli. Carilah yang mampu beli sebab ada 36,761 band kat dunia ni. Kalau tak memiliki pun merchandise tu, tak mati, kan?

Alasan seterusnya ialah nak support band tersebut. Tapi beli bootleg (cetak rompak)? Ada suis tak on kot kalau camtu punya alasan.

Rip off semua orang dah faham. Isu bootleg mungkin 10 tahun lagi 20 tahun lagi atau generasi selepas ini baru akan faham. Masalah ini biasa bagi penduduk negara 3rd world country macam kita.
BTW istilah bootleg ni kena faham definisi asalnya. Yang dimaksudkan dengan bootleg disini ialah cetak rompak (pirated). Cuba google maksud bootleg yang sebenarnya.

Ulasan: KATE BUSH The Kick Inside LP

Terbaca pasal Kate Bush online nak rilis reissue sebab tak pernah reissue yang special. Peminat ramai mau. Dan terbaca tentang "peculiar" tentang vokal beliau yang menyebabkan beliau dapat status cult.
Berdasarkan atas maklumat ini, TANPA mendengar mp3, saya pun cari lah albumnya. Excited juga menunggu sebab saya konfiden, mesti ada sesuatu yang betul-betul menarik tentang beliau ni.

Tambahan pula, album 1st ini dibantu oleh ramai nama2 hebat dalam scene prog rock antaranya Stuart Elliott of The Alan Parsons Project dan David Gilmour of Pink Floyd (!).

Teka umur berapa Kate Bush rakam album ni? 19 tahun. Dan KESEMUA lagu adalah ciptaan beliau sendiri.

Verdict? Nampak gaya album pertama ini menjadi sebab saya terpaksa kumpul full discography. It's that good, seriously.

Coffee break at Civil Engineering Dept, UTP

Some time not long ago (it was 2011), the department had scheduled a weekly coffee break and I was the organizer. It ran for a few times before I was the only one left who attended it. Yes, the final session was only me and a cup of hot coffee in the room and I stood diligently for ½ an hour J.  Since nobody was interested, the coffee break session stopped and I took my broken heart away with me.

Anyway, I think, and the department thinks that it is the right time again to start all over. The reasons we are doing this are:


  • It is a good culture of the academia (especially western Uni – those who experienced this will understand) to have the session to mingle between the PG students and academics. 
  •  Drink tea/coffee, eat cakes (anyone can contribute), celebrate birthdays, newborns, newly married, announcing suprising news (like increased bonus this year) 
  •  Have a chat on writings by Stephen Hawking, Al-Ghazali, Karen Armstrong, Ibn Taimiyyah, Luke Skywalker… anything 
  •  Etc etc..


And this is informal. No attendance will be taken. No penalty to those who are absent.

So I am keeping the day and time, the same as in 2011 every WEDNESDAY 1010-1040 and the same venue 13-02-09. There are plenty of coffee and (sometimes) biscuits and lollies in the pantry, although you have to line up for the hot water from a small kettle. If you have a class, meeting or any other things, that is too bad but you can always come next week, next month or next semester.

THE DAY OF THE EVENT

 

Assalamuallaikum

Being a bit of a musician myself (previously part-time, now downgraded into a lost cause), musical research will always be an interesting to me to read. Years back, I was very keen to supervise a MSc student to research the underground music movement in Malaysia with Prof Murad Merican.  We even had a candidate ready to register (a school teacher). Unfortunately, it got lost along the way.

Anyway, there was a paper published on musical trend in the USA. Music itself has been debated by philosophers, sociologists, journalists, bloggers and pop stars, unfortunately, not may being explored scientifically. This research, intend to look into the long history of music scientifically. Questions related the increased/decreased of popularity over time, its continuous or rather discontinuity in the evolutionary and when was this happened were tried to be understood. One of the interesting fact of this research was that the tool used to scientifically answer the related questions were previously used in the area of biology/bioinformatics.

The study found that:

  1. There are three music revolutions - in 1964 (The Beatles), 1983 (new wave, disco, hardrock) and 1991 (birth of rap). 
  2.  Claims that pop music is starting to sound the same, that many has claimed, is refuted. There was no evidence for the progressive homogenization of music in the charts and little sign of diversity cycles within the 50 year time frame of the study. 
  3.  Pop music shows a pattern from biological evolution known as punctuated equilibrium, in which periods of gradual change are separated by explosions of complexity (whatever that means!)
Point no 2 is interesting because another study shows that most of us lost interest in new music when we reached the age of 33, simply we thought among others that, new music is getting bland. Although I can fairly say I am not in that category as I am still exploring and listening to new music at the age post-33 :)

Pensyarah dan kerja konsultansi

Sekadar hiasan
Saya menerima beberapa undangan kerja konsultansi dari rakan2 industri. Ada yang berkait dengan bidang saya (structural/civil engineering) dan ada juga yang tidak berkaitan. Antara request yang dapat ialah; ada tahu sesiapa yang boleh design sekian sekian? Ada kontek sesiapa yang boleh calculate sekian sekian?

Fenomena ini berlaku sejak dua menjak ini menyebabkan saya terfikir:

1. Industri perlukan engineer bertaraf pensyarah untuk kerja one-off. Kelebihan ini dilihat dari segi kos dan kepakaran yang beri advantage kepada company kecil yang tidak mahukan overhead yang tinggi menampung gaji bulanan professional.

2. Ada pensyarah yang bersedia untuk terima sebab extra income juga pengalaman industri yang berguna untuk karier.

3. Perlunya "a group of like-minded" people bagi pensyarah yang berminat dengan kerja2 begini. Setupnya perlu segera, tak banyak cengkadak dan kurangkan birokrasi. Mungkin saya perlu mulakan konsortium ini untuk mengumpulkan pensyarah seluruh Malaysia.

In the end, everyone is happy. Company happy, pensyarah happy, ekonomi pun happy. Universiti di mana pensyarah ini bekerja ini pun happy sebab pensyarah dapat tambah ilmu praktikal tanpa universiti bayar untuk training pun.

Syarat: Kerja hakiki pensyarah di universiti tersebut tak dikacau. Untuk itu pandai2 kena jaga masa dan pengurusan.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Pessiki has conducted research and teaches courses in areas of behavior and design of structures; nondestructive evaluation of materials and structures; fire effects on structures; earthquake engineering; and innovative building materials and systems. Dr. Pessiki has worked on numerous funded research and laboratory experiment projects. His findings have been published in dozens of conference proceedings and journal publications, in addition to book chapters and technical reports.

Dr. Pessiki is a member of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI), which awarded him the Leslie Martin Award of Merit in 2006. PCI named Pessiki a Fellow and a Distinguished Educator. He is also a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute. Other honors and awards include Lehigh teaching and service recognition as well as Drexel University's Distinguished Alumni Lectureship, a fellowship from the Japan Society for Promotion of Science, honorary membership in the Brazilian Society of Structural Engineers, and a best paper award from ASCE Journal of Architectural Engineering.

Dr. Pessiki has experience at a variety of prestigious schools. He was a visiting professor at Perdue University, post-doctoral associate and research assistant at Cornell University, and visiting assistant professor at Syracuse University. Prior to his career in higher education, Dr. Pessiki worked as a structural engineer for the architectural firm Kling-Lindquist Inc., which has since evolved into Kling Stubbins. He is a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, and The Masonry Society. He is also a member of Tau Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon.

Lecture 1: The Evolution of Self-Centering Low-Damage Seismic Structural Systems – Concept, Research and Implementation in Practice

Traditional design of seismic resistant systems for building structures have often relied on structural damage (e.g. yielding of steel, non-linear compression response of concrete, etc.) as the intended response of the structure to limit the increase in lateral force and to dissipate energy. The goal of this traditional design approach was life-safety, i.e. to prevent building collapse. Following this approach, a major seismic event can cause significant damage to the structure. This in turn requires extensive repair, or if the damage is severe enough, for the structure to be demolished. More recently, an alternative design approach has emerged that is intended to provide structures that remain damage free and self-center (i.e. exhibit no residual drift) after the earthquake. This presentation describes this alternative approach, reviews some of the research performed on a variety of structural systems in steel and concrete structures, including the results of recent large-scale tests of cast-in-place concrete walls, and presents examples of the implementation of these self-centering low-damage seismic structural systems in actual building structures.

Lecture 2: Post-earthquake Fire Response of Steel Building Structures –Recent Research at Lehigh University

Current building design practice in the United States uses a combination of active and passive fire protection systems to provide structural fire protection in multistory steel buildings. Active fire protection systems include sprinklers and firefighters. Passive fire protection systems are those built into the building system that do no require specific activation, such as sprayed fire-resistive materials (SFRMs). Sprinklers and other active systems are intended to extinguish a fire or to limit its spread, and SFRM is intended to thermally protect structural steel elements during a fire. Past events have demonstrated that earthquakes can cause fires in buildings, damage active fire protection systems such as sprinklers, and reduce the effectiveness of fire-fighting capabilities. In such an event where the active fire protection systems are compromised by an earthquake, passive systems such as SFRM may remain the only available means to mitigate the effects of the fire on the structural system in a building. However, during an earthquake, the integrity of the SFRM may become compromised because of damage to the underlying steel structure to which the SFRM is bonded. For example, for traditional strong-column weak-beam designs, large deformation demands are place on the beams in the vicinity of the columns, which in turn place large demands on the ability of the SFRM to remain attached to the beams. Gravity load frames undergo the same lateral drift as the lateral force resisting frames, and thus are also susceptible to structural damage and damage the SFRM. This presentation discusses the results of recent experimental and analytical research at Lehigh University on the post-earthquake fire scenario in steel frame building structures.

Promoter muzik metal dengan track record dan kapasiti untuk berunding dengan band besar ini tak banyak. Yang kita kenal, cuma organizer/promoter Metalcamp. Track record baik kerana mereka sudah bikin Metalcamp setiap tahun. Tahun lepas bersama Municipal Waste, ingat?

Cuma konfliknya ialah ada dua band besar. Nak dibuat dua kali, mungkin kos terlalu tinggi. Risiko juga tinggi. Maka, keputusan menjurus kepada band mana yang lebih besar di Malaysia.

Jika sanggup ambil risiko, sapu kedua-duanya. Soalan berbalik kepada peminat metal tempatan. Anda mahu pergi membeli tiket untuk kedua-dua band ini?

Saya perbetulkan soalan saya. Untuk memeriahkan scene metal tempatan, sanggupkah anda (peminat metal tempatan) mengeluarkan duit untuk menonton kedua-duanya? Itu kena ambil kira tiket sekeping dalam lingkungan RM100.

Ini mungkin menjadi persoalan yang lebih hebat bagi organizer/promoter kerana merekalah yang akan menanggung segala risikonya.

Ulasan: SAXON Sacrifice

SAXON adalah antara band yang saya ikuti sipi-sipi. Saya bukan peminat tegar tetapi saya ambil tahu. Dan ada masanya, albumnya saya beli. Kenapa bukan peminat tegar? Sebabnya SAXON adalah hits and misses; dalam konteks album juga dalam konteks lagu-lagu dalam setiap albumnya. Dengan lain perkataan, SAXON tidak konsisten.

Sacrifice adalah album ke-20. Paling menarik perhatian saya dengan layout CD ini ialah artwork emblem. Kalau anda perasan, artwork emblem juga menjadi hiasan kulit luar untuk album Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm of The Law, Lionheart dan Into The Labyrinth. Kerana emblem untuk album ini adalah idea vokalisnya, Biff Byford, maka saya syak emblem yang sebelumnya juga adalah idea beliau. Cuba amati ukiran pada emblem ini dan buat sangkaan, penilaian dan reduksi. Ya, kerja sia-sia sebab apa maksudnya pun tak tau!

Emblem adalah perkara kedua kerana perkara utama ialah lagu-lagu di dalam album ini. Sukacita dimaklumkan bahawa lagu-lagu dalam album ini memang power! Nak pula meja mixer dan rakaman dijaga oleh sound engineer (juga produser) terkenal dalam dunia metal, Andy Sneap. Maka anda akan disajikan dengan bunyian yang wall-of-sound. Gitarnya terasa garang berasap apabila chord major digunapakai, garing basah bila chord minor diulit dan lemak berkrim apabila solo digoreng.

Vokal Biff Byford pun memang top class untuk album ini. Dah tua macam tu pun suara maintain. Takde perubahan ketara dengan album Power & The Glory (1983); iaitu album pertama yang saya dengar dari SAXON masa sekolah rendah dahulu. Ini sudah tentu menggamit memori usang.

Produksi wall-of-sound SAXON sejak kebelakangan ini, banyak membantu saya kembali kepada SAXON. Namun, jangan disangka SAXON cuba menjadi metalcore, thrash metal atau death metal dengan produksi sebegini. Bahkan heavy metal jugalah yang disajikan setiap masa. Keyakinan dan kesetiaan SAXON kepada heavy metal ini, walau dilanda pelbagai trend muzik semasa telah menjadikan SAXON satu band yang kult. JUDAS PRIEST pun pernah goyah dengan album Turbo dan MANOWAR dengan album choirnya. Namun, SAXON tetap utuh!

Saya mencadangkan untuk anda mendengar lagu Night Of The Wolf dan Sacrifice untuk anda dapatkan gambaran ringkas tentang apakah yang tersaji dari album Sacrifice ini.

IPTA pun adalah bisnes. Kebanyakan orang yang datang, walaupun 10A, adalah bodoh @ tak cerdik. Bodoh @ tak cerdik dalam bidang yang mereka enrolled. Contohnya, si A adalah bodoh @ tak cerdik dalam bidang Economy. Maka si A akan belajar luar dalam ekonomi untuk dapatkan ijazah/diploma yang dia nak tu.

Kemasukan golongan seperti si A ini adalah merupakan satu bisnes kepada IPTA. Tetapi tidak pula IPTA mengambil kesempatan di atas bodoh @ tak cerdik itu untuk menipu si A. Kenapa? Sebabnya, ubat kepada bodoh @ tak cerdik adalah pandai @ cerdik. Dan apabila si A dan golongan2 seperti A jadi pandai, maka makin bertambahlah bisnes IPTA tadi.

Bodoh @ tak cerdik itu adalah asal. Pandai @ cerdik itu patut jadi matlamat. Apabila majoriti jadi pandai @ cerdik, maka berkembanglah sesuatu masyarakat itu. Mustahil sesuatu masyarakat jadi maju apabila majoritinya adalah bodoh @ tak cerdik.

Jadi saya tidak faham kenapa apabila seseorang itu bodoh @ tak cerdik, maka itu boleh dijadikan alasan untuk memadankan muka orang itu seperti, memang patut pun dia kena tipu sebab bodoh. Atau apabila berada di sesuatu situasi, si bodoh @ tak cerdik tadi perlu ada orang pandai @ cerdik disisinya untuk elak si A dari kena tipu.

Patutnya, beliau diajar supaya jadi pandai @ cerdik. Sebab itulah ciri-ciri masyarakat yang maju. Tak gitu?

Saya merasakan bahawa membeli dan menjual rumah untuk untung sampai harga spekulatif naik harga tak mampu milik adalah morally wrong. Tak kira pembuat untung adalah rakyat ataupun orang luar.

Mungkin dasar baru perlu ada seperti maksimun boleh milik dua rumah saja pada satu2 ketika. Nak beli lagi satu, kena jual salah satu dari 2 yang dimiliki sekarang.

Tapi susah juga sebab walaupun kita kata menentang kapitalis, diri sendiri pun nak jadi kapitalis kalau ada lobang kosong.

Warga Bandar U dan Lakeville di Seri Iskandar diharap dapat berjaga-jaga.

Rumah kena pecah lagi :Bndr U
Berikut sembang2 penduduk pg ni Jumaat 10Julai 2015 ,:.
Rumah dipecah masuk di bandar u mlm td.
Kereta dan barang berharga hilang.
Belum cuti raya bermula dah kena pecah.
Imagine bila semua org balik cuti raya?
Rumah 2 tingkat Bandar U.
Kenderaan hilang - Hilux serta beberapa barang lain.
Penghun di rumah.
Tidor di tingkat atas.
Modus operandi sama spt kejadian yg lalu.....Pecah grill & sliding door, ambil kunci & curi kereta.
Mungkin kehilangan plate rumah lain j7ga mlm tadi ada kaitan. Depa maybe nk tukar plate pd hilux tu.
Waktu org tgh lena.

Tazkirah pendek meja makan ketika berbuka bersama bini dan anak2.

"Makan bagi habis. Jangan ambil banyak sangat dalam pinggan nanti tak habis. Jangan bila manis sikit, tak makan. Pedas sikit tak makan. Kurang garam sikit, tak makan. Makanlah walaupun kurang manis sikit, pedas sikit. Jangan dibuang. Makanlah.

Rezeki Allah yang bagi bukan dari duit Bapak. Allah bagi rezeki bukan untuk dibazirkan. Takut2 nanti Allah tarik rezeki sebab makanan dibuang2 sampai nak makan pun tak dapat."

Moga bagi kesan pada anak2. Bini memang dah lama terkesan
